Finally! An Official Trailer for "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" and Viral Videos

Mulder and Scully

Like many, I've been anticipating a real trailer for the upcoming X-Files: I Want to Believe ever  since the cam footage from Wondercon offered us a tantalizing glimpse at the resurrection of Mulder and Scully. I would like to say that the newly released trailer doesn't disappoint -- but I honestly can't.

While it's great to see that things are moving along with the film's release, this overly-generic trailer is doing very little to stir my excitement for the film. It's simply not a well-made trailer, and plays like a cookie-cutter example of how to make an X-Files movie trailer. Theme? Check. Explosions? Check. Scully not believing Mulder? Check. There's little imagination to it, and no glimpse at all of the decidedly terrrestrial plot this time around.

If this is how an actual X-Files fan feels about the first major promotional piece for the film, I'm even more concerned how general audiences will receive it.

Let's face it, fans will see this film regardless of how its promoted. What we really need is effective marketing that will rope in general moviegoers, which of course starts with trailers and TV spots that don't give off a resounding vibe of meh.  The current trailer simply will not do much to convince people who never cared for the X-Files in the first place.

The viral videos are certainly an in thing to do now marketing-wise, but they're merely novelties at this point. Show us something new Fox!

I'm just desperately afraid this will turn out to be another Serenity situation -- that it will become a film that fans will flock to and love, but will never find any common moviegoer support. I want this franchise to survive, and for that to happen this movie simply cannot flop.

But enough of my ranting, check out the trailer and viral videos for yourself below, or visit IGN for a higher quality version of the trailer. The X-Files: I Want to Believe hits  on July 25, 2008.
