Warner Bros. and Capcom are teaming up to deliver an adaptation of the popular Lost Planet video game. David Hayter, the screenwriter of X-Men, X2, and the upcoming Watchmen (and also the voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series), will pen the screenplay. Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Steven Paul will produce.
Capcom has been busy recently getting their most successful franchises into cinemas, having already done so with three Resident Evil movies, and currently working on Street Fighter and Onimusha.
It's hard to imagine why Lost Planet deserves a movie though. The story, which follows an expedition to an ice planet that harbors an energy source with the potential to save mankind, was the worst handled aspect of the game, and marked one of those occasions where you just want to press 'A', skip the damn cutscenes, and get back to blasting gigantic bug creatures on the gorgeous snow-covered alien planet.
If we're lucky, maybe the filmmakers will take note of this, press 'A' on the story, and focus strictly on the action. That's the only way I can see this being any good. Unless, that is, the very talented David Hayter scraps the original storyline and finds a way to simply build off the premise instead.
