Somehow I'm not surprised that the Coen's are going back to their well-honed comedy style after the dark and weighty No Country for Old Men. And levity is certainly in order for the Coens, after bringing Anton Chigur to the big screen. Now we have the first trailer for Burn After Reading, an espionage romp starring Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, and Frances McDormand.
Honestly, I'm not sure why this trailer was released as a red band. There's not much in the way of nudity or violence, and the swearing could have easily been toned down for a more general trailer. Still, I'm glad red band is becoming more accepted these days.
Aside from that, I can't honestly speak to much in the trailer. Bradd Pitt looks hilarious, and it's great to Francis McDormand together with the Coens again. One thing that struck me: I really wonder if the Coen's are ever going to get tired exploring the many ways money and greed can ruin lives. At this point I'd consider them a bit obsessed. Just a bit.
View it in HD over at Apple trailers, but be wary that it requires iTunes for some reason. I hope this doesn't become a trend. Burn After Reading hits theaters on September 12, 2008.
